What is a Clinical Exercise Physiologist?

There are many varying health professionals that Australians can utilize when they are diagnosed with an acute or chronic condition, injury and/or simply want to improve their daily living. Some of these include; Physiotherapist’s, Chiropractors, Osteopaths, Occupational therapists, Dietitians, Psychologists and your General Practitioner.

Exercise Physiologists (EP) are also accredited as Allied Health Professionals and are trained and qualified to treat chronic injuries/conditions and diseases. You may see an EP in public and private hospitals, Primary, Secondary and Tertiary health care, GP clinics, Allied health Clinics, workplace health and safety, Private clinics, gyms and amateur or elite sport.

Exercise Physiologists do have a governing body much like other allied health to ensure each graduate is fully qualified and capable to treating patients safely and effectively. Exercise and Sports Science Australia is the sole governing body for EP’s and defines an EP as,

“AEPs are university qualified allied health professionals equipped with the knowledge, skills and competencies to design, deliver and evaluate safe and effective exercise interventions for people with acute, sub-acute or chronic medical conditions, injuries or disabilities. Pathology domains covered by the services of AEPs include cardiovascular, metabolic, neurological, musculoskeletal, cancers, kidney, respiratory / pulmonary and mental health, and any other conditions for which there is evidence that exercise can improve the client’s clinical status.”
