Client Success Story: How Daniel learned to love exercise!
Today, Longevity Exercise Physiology Drummoyne, Edgecliff, Marrickville, Bella Vista, Randwick, Pymble, Balmain, Neutral Bay, Coburg – Melbourne, and Barrie, Ontario – Canada look to praise one of their clients, Daniel, who has made life changing progress while training with Longevity
** Name changed for privacy reasons.
Daniel** has been training with Longevity since early 2020. He started out as a young male with Autism who was struggling with movement co-ordination, low self-esteem and had trouble with weight management. The young man you see today is completely unrecognisable in comparison!
Today, we shed light on the tremendous progress Daniel has made and the difference his family have noticed through his hard work with our exercise physiologists.
When Daniel first started, he was completing 1 minute sit-to-stand tests, incline push-ups and a 6-minute walk test. He was very unfit and his coordination troubles were evident. Fast forward to his most recent session, Daniel is now confidently back squatting 60kg, bench pressing 45kg, flipping tires and smashing the assault bike.
The sessions with Daniel are always a blast. They are the perfect mix of exercising hard and fun, cheerful banter. I did my university placement at Longevity about a year ago while Daniel was training with our Exercise Physiologist Susannah, and I couldn’t believe how different of a person he is! He is now looking very fit and his personality is charismatic – he has me laughing through the whole session. He is truly an awesome young man.
Unfortunately, Daniel is headed away with some mates – so I couldn’t ask him these questions, so his amazing mum gave some answers on his behalf (also her perspective on his journey).
Q: Has Exercise Physiology positively affected his life?
A: Exercise physiology has been the biggest game changer for Daniel. He was struggling with his weight. He also has co-ordination issues due to a condition he was born with. This stopped him being able to be involved in team sports, as he was unable to keep up with others. He would also fall over sometimes, for example after kicking a ball.
Initially, he couldn’t even pick up a barbell without toppling over. Exercise physiologists have a detailed understanding of the body and health conditions so can target exercises specially. Initially, exercises were modified to help him do repetitions, understand form, increase coordination, and build strength. For example, squats were done by sitting on a bench, then weight was progressively added and increased. He now can free form squat with 60kg.
“In the past, if friends would throw a footy ball around, he would always sit out, whereas now, he joins in. He is so much more confident, engaged and happy.”
To help him lose weight, we used Lite’n’Easy to get him started and used to portion sizes. Then his exercise physiologist started giving him tips on what to do to keep his weight loss journey going. Seeing improvements has encouraged him with his fitness and weight loss journey.
He has a total new mindset now. He is more active in other areas of life and has so much more stamina. In the past, if friends would throw a footy ball around, he would always sit out, whereas now, he joins in. He is so much more confident, engaged and happy.
He also does some Personal Training (PT) sessions to complement the exercise physiology to keep building strength. The exercise physiologist is in contact with the PT so that they are working on the same things. It’s also very important to have a good relationship with the exercise physiologist so that you develop trust in what they are doing. It also makes the sessions more enjoyable as a lot of good conversations happen during the sessions.

Having Grayson has been great in that he is also a bit of a mentor to my son, being a good younger male role model. He gets Daniel to work hard during the sessions, but there are some good and fun conversations at the same time. You know that they genuinely have the best interests at heart for their clients and really do care.
Well done to Daniel, your years of hard work have paid off and it truly shows! We love our sessions with you – seeing your progress and growth physically and emotionally has made us so proud. Keep it up!
