Is One Hour a Week Enough? What is the Real Return on Investment of Regular Exercise?
If you live with chronic pain, exercise might feel like the last thing you want to do. But what if we told you that just one hour a week could help you feel better, move easier, and take back control?
At Longevity, we see people every day who are managing a health concern. People who believed they had tried everything. People who felt stuck. Many thought that exercise would make things worse, but the truth is, when done the right way, moving a little each week can lead to big improvements in pain, strength, and quality of life.

Can One Hour A Week Really Make a Difference?
A large 2022 study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that just 75 minutes of movement per week (around 10–11 minutes per day) was linked with a 23% lower risk of early death, including from heart disease, stroke, and cancer.
Another study from Harvard followed over 17,000 people and found that just one or two sessions per week helped reduce the risk of serious illness, especially in older adults and those already dealing with long-term conditions.
A 2023 review in The Lancet Global Health showed that short, regular bouts of exercise can improve pain, mental wellbeing, and independence, especially in people living with chronic pain.
Small, regular changes matter. Maybe more than you think.
The Cost of Doing Nothing
When pain hangs around, it’s easy to avoid movement and we understand why. But doing nothing comes with its own setbacks:
- Muscles weaken
- Joints stiffen
- Energy drops
- Mood and confidence take a hit
- Everyday tasks get harder
- The pain often feels worse overtime
Doing just one hour of guided exercise each week can break that cycle.
How We Can Help
We don’t push you too hard or tell you to just ‘work through it’. We learn how your body works, how it responds to exercise and stress, and develop an individualised plan suitable to your needs and goals.
At Longevity, we give you:
- One-to-one, 60-minute sessions in a gym
- A plan that works with your body, not against it
- A regular booking time, so it becomes part of your week
- A real relationship with your own Exercise Physiologist
- A team that listens, adjusts, and walks the journey with you
