Today Longevity Exercise Physiology Drummoyne, EdgecliffMarrickvilleBella VistaRandwickPymble and Balmain, and Neutral Bay discuss how exercise can improve your mental health during this lockdown period.

It’s so important to look after our mental health during this lockdown period. Being aware of how you are feeling and what you are able to do to look after your physical, mental and social wellbeing is an important part of staying healthy during this challenging time.

Exercise pumps blood to the brain which can help you think more clearly

How does exercise improve your mental health?

  • Exercise releases endorphins and serotonin (chemicals within your brain) that leads to improvements in mood
  • Exercising regularly can reduce stress and symptoms of mental health including depression and anxiety
  • Exercise helps improve stress
  • Exercise pumps blood to the brain which can help you think more clearly
  • Exercise increases connections between nerve cells in the brain which helps improve memory

How much exercise do you need to complete?

  • Australian Guidelines state to complete 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous aerobic physical activity each day of the week
  • This can either be done in the full 30 minutes or be split up by combining 3 10-minute sessions
  • Find exercise that you enjoy participating in, whether that is going for a walk with a friend, an online gym session or a session with an Exercise Physiologist
  • Use equipment you have around the home including benches for push ups, seats for squats, cans of food for strength exercises and stairs for exercises such as step-ups.

We are all currently facing unprecedented challenges due to COVID-19, and it’s important to look after your mental health, but also checking in on friends and family. Reach out to family and friends over online platforms, find a buddy to complete an exercise session with or reach out to a health professional.
