Stepping Up: Building Rapport and Confidence in Week 2 of Placement

Hi again, I’m Charlie. I’m in my second semester at the University of Sydney studying a Masters of Exercise Physiology, and this is my first clinical placement block as a student!

Week 2 of my placement with Longevity came and went in a flash! I’m based in Marrickville and really enjoyed the fast-paced week.

This week I really built on the confidence I had developed in the first week and got more and more involved in sessions. After I had spent the last week shadowing the EP’s here at Marrickville running their sessions, I felt accustomed with the Longevity protocols, and ready to have more input in the sessions. I started running some of the cardio protocols with clients, and built greater confidence with each one. I also learnt some admin processes which go on behind the scenes at Longevity, giving me experience on the non-client facing side of Exercise Physiology as well as how some of their scheduling and planning systems work to maintain efficiency and practicality for their clients lifetime booking system.

Having my second and third sessions with some clients has enabled me to build on the rapport built in week 1 and further delve into subjects I found they were interested in whilst exercising, really rounding out their experience. I think this has really helped build trust, helping show that I care about them, their goals, training, and their life outside of the gym. The EP’s have continued to help teach me effective cueing techniques that they utilise, to hammer home effective exercise techniques for each individual. This has helped me build confidence with my own exercise instruction to clients throughout the week, and now I feel more confident having input in both the cardio and strength aspects of the sessions and see how this varies across all clients. No two clients are the same so it’s great to see the adaptations to protocols to suit each person.

Overall week 2 proved to be a great one! I am more confident and feel I am progressing my way to running full client sessions with the helpful feedback and tips from the EP’s here at Longevity Marrickville.

Excited for week 3 to come!
