Welcome Grayson, Longevity’s new Exercise Physiologist!

Longevity Exercise Physiology Drummoyne, EdgecliffMarrickvilleBella VistaRandwick, PymbleBalmain and Neutral Bay are very excited to welcome Accredited Exercise Physiologist, Grayson Kieran! Grayson is a Canadian born, soccer loving guy. He grew up always interested in trying any and every sport he could get his hands on. Water polo, swimming, tennis, Oztag, basketball and cricket were among the plethora of sports tried. However, soccer emerged as the constant in his life, starting at the age of 4 and he continues to captain the first-grade reserves at Hornsby Heights Hornets Football club. He fell in love with the physical and mental health benefits that came with the exercise and camaraderie. He follows Tottenham Hotspur in the EPL and the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL.

Grayson’s passion for exercise physiology emerged during his rehabilitation from 2 ACL tears in high school. The second was a re-rupture just 7 months into his rehab after the first surgery. It was a combination of learning the science behind his recovery and spending time in the that gym sparked his interest in exercise physiology. He is constantly keen to learn the why’s and how’s of the body.

Through personal experience and exposure to mental health conditions including anxiety, depression and borderline personality disorder (BPD) , a special passion has come about for Grayson in how exercise can influence and affect those living with these conditions. He has developed an interest in finding the right and most enjoyable type of exercise for everyone and knowing the amazing holistic health benefits that are paired with it.

“I believe that there is a fun and suitable type of exercise out there for everyone, it’s just a matter of finding it!”

Understanding that exercise can be a different experience for everyone, Grayson’s calming, reassuring and fun-loving nature will make you feel right at home. Outside of work Grayson loves live music, specifically local rock artists. He also enjoys his food and will be keen to share secrets about his favourite feeds around Sydney!

  • The ‘Cosmetic Fitness’ Industry: a Facebook Rant

You might recognise the image above from your favourite social media platform. This image went viral and was a demonstration by Melanie Ventura about how easy it is to fake a before and after shot. You can read about how Melanie did this by clicking here

Also this week a friend of mine (thanks Kelly) wrote an enthusiastic and well constructed rant regarding the (health and) fitness industry.

“Rant: The fitness industry promotes a sort of body fetishism that produces a strategy for narcissistic survival and supposed emancipation, but that is simply bringing about a ‘cultural revolution’ that reproduces the very worst features of the constrained and superficial civilisation that the industry seeks to criticise. Fitness is not about youth and sexiness. It’s about fitness. Stop showing me sexy people who happen to have abs and can lift their foot above their botoxed face without sweating. Show me someone who can do their first triathlon, or who has put off osteoporosis for another 10 years.”

The unfortunate truth is that this argument is one that I find very difficult to refute.

  • Back in the Habit

Yes, it’s that time of year again… Silly season is officially OVER and it’s time to stop treating your body like it’s a dumping ground for the World’s worst products and time for a little TLC. Here are my top 10 tips for getting back into training in the New Year if you’ve had a little break from exercising:
  • Exercise and Hip Bursitis

  • An Accidental Runner

As with most life-changing events I have experienced, running happened to me by accident. And, despite my physio, Amanda’s, inspiring assertion that I am a “natural runner”, anyone who has known me for any length of time, including myself, remain shocked that I have started, let alone persisted, with this activity. The main reason being that a key feature of my personality is a complete absence of any intrinsic motivation to engage in physical exercise merely for the sake of it (Sometimes mistakenly referred to, by the ill-informed, as laziness). The other reason is that I have a chronic mental illness, punctuated by episodes of depression.

I can easily explain having overcome the first impediment – the personality problem, as resulting from a combination of three main factors.
