Biggest Killers of Men: How Exercise Can Help You

We all have at least one man in our lives who has pushed their health to the side. Maybe you are even guilty of this yourself? This stereotype is a sad but harsh reality.  Longevity Exercise PhysiologyDrummoyne, EdgecliffMarrickvilleCastle HillRandwickPymbleKingsgrove, Neutral Bay,RhodesFive DockCasey,Gungahlinand Coburg discuss why Men need to start getting serious about their health.

Last year, the Australian Health and Wellness Institute (AIHW) reported 73% of men between the ages of 18-64 did not meet the Australian Physical Activity Guidelines. More shockingly, this number increased to 9 out of 10 for men above the age of 65.

These numbers are significant because physical activity is arguably the best defence we have against chronic disease.

Author of Outlive; The Science and Art of Longevity, Peter Attia, M.D., states that “Exercise is by far the most potent longevity drug.” Exercise can not only help improve your lifespan, but also your health span (quality of life.)

To put it simply, if you’re not prioritising exercise, your chances of living a long and active life decrease dramatically.

So what are the biggest killers of men? In 2021, the AIHW reported the following;

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Dementia, including Alzheimers disease
  • Lung Cancer
  • Cerebrovascular disease
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

The good news is that all of these diseases have modifiable risk factors. There are lifestyle choices and changes that can be made today which will significantly improve health outcomes and lower the risk of getting these conditions across the lifespan.

And as we’ve already mentioned, exercise is the single most important modifiable lifestyle factor for managing or even preventing the above illnesses.

For some, the above information may come as no surprise. Many men know that exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight and managing other metabolic markers such as cholesterol and blood sugar are important. The issue is that many men still choose to bury their head in the sand.

This is where our Longevity Exercise Physiologists can help you, or the men in your life. At Longevity, we take a proactive approach to health. We use individualised Longevity exercise prescription to not only assist in the management of chronic disease, but to also try and prevent rapid decline in fitness and strength associated with ageing. Many men pride themselves on being able to support and care for their families. At Longevity, we want to help you do this for as long as possible! In order to achieve this, it is essential you maintain the fitness, strength and stamina required to keep up with your children, grandchildren, or even to support your elderly parents.
