Halfway Through: Lessons and Progress from Week 3 of Placement

Hey, it’s Charlie. I’m in my first year at the University of Sydney, studying a Masters of Exercise Physiology, and I’m back again for another week in review of my placement at Longevity Marrickville. Let’s see how week 3 turned out…

This week felt even better than the second in terms of confidence and rapport with clients. Now I had seen some clients multiple times, making me feel more and more connected to the clients I was seeing and having developed a greater understanding of their long-term goals and journey.

The team here at Longevity really made me feel like my input into sessions was valued, and kept encouraging me to do a little bit more each session, which has helped improve my coaching, planning and soft skills with clients.

One thing I have been working on this week is asking my supervising EPs more questions about certain practices/coaching techniques to further develop my clinical understanding and reasoning for prescription, and then also learning how to communicate this to clients with different levels of motivation, health literacy and understanding. This is something I have wanted to improve upon, as I have realised assuming answers is never better than knowing the exact reason for a practice. Asking the EP’s even simple questions and gaining their reasoning/insight has really helped me develop this area and even opened up scientific discussions, making for a healthy working environment.

I had my mid-placement assessment with my main supervisor, Isaac, and we clearly mapped out together my next 3 weeks of placement based on my areas for improvement and current strengths.

I really appreciate at Longevity how open they are to my thinking, taking on my knowledge and valuing it, despite their far greater experience in the field of Exercise Physiology.

Week 3 and half way of my placement wrapped! Keen to build and learn for the next three weeks here at Longevity Marrickville.

See you next week!
