Knee, Hip or Shoulder surgery – Inpatient to Outpatient, now what?

Today, Jarrat Wood, the founder of Longevity Exercise Physiology Drummoyne, EdgecliffMarrickvilleBella VistaRandwickPymbleBalmainNeutral Bay, Coburg – Melbourne, and Barrie, Ontario – Canada  shares with us his recent experience of a hip resurfacing operation and how he is navigating recovery back to full strength & fitness.

Jarrat –

Recent personal experience of a Birmingham Hip Resurfacing has helped me to have a deeper understanding of what it is like to be the client rather than the Exercise Physiologist, Exercise Scientist or Personal Trainer.
A hip resurfacing is a type of hip replacement that is more bone conserving and is usually recommended for younger, more active people. However, it has a similar recovery time to a total hip replacement.

It has always been my personal experience that has most informed my practice professionally
, but another reminder is always helpful. Personally, I have always looked for health professionals who have been through similar experiences to me. They need to be qualified and knowledgeable but having shared a similar background brings another level to their advice.

“We are all looking to be healthier than we were prior to our surgery (I certainly am) and this event can be the catalyst to make the lifestyle changes that will set up the next five, ten, fifteen, or twenty plus years of your life.”

I have had tremendous care for my surgery and early stages of recovery. We should all be grateful for the high standard of medical care that we are provided with in Australia. My care in Sydney at St Vincent’s Private, followed by Wolper Private Hospital has been excellent. There are so many great inpatient and outpatient programs across Sydney like Eastern Suburbs Private, The Mater, Wolper, Westmead, Norwest Private and Lakeview Private hospitals.

What can be difficult though, is knowing where to go after these programs have ceased. There is often a long way to go for a knee replacement, hip replacement, shoulder reconstruction or knee reconstruction, just to name a few.

That is where Longevity Exercise Physiology has always been valuable to so many clients. The transition ‘back to real life’ is difficult. Many people do not have access to gym equipment and cardiovascular equipment upon discharge from hospital, but this can be a tremendous opportunity to make some changes in your life that you may have been putting off. Longevity can provide for all of these and has facilities which are better equipped than the hospital or outpatient program you have just been discharged from, for the strength and fitness training that you need.

We are all looking to be healthier than we were prior to our surgery (I certainly am) and this event can be the catalyst to make the lifestyle changes that will set up the next five, ten, fifteen, or twenty plus years of your life.

“Longevity are the experts in mid to late-stage care. Our model gives you access to all the equipment and results you are looking for, in an atmosphere of care, shared with clients of similar stages of recovery to yourself.”

Longevity’s Exercise Physiology services are the perfect fit for this phase of the recovery back to normal life (or a better life, why else would you have chosen surgery if not to be better than before!). The Longevity team understand the later stages of the rehabilitation process and how to take you from early stage or mid-stage recovery back to full strength, full fitness and with a better overall health than pre-surgery.

Just as your inpatient team of nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and exercise physiologists are the experts in acute care, Longevity are the experts in mid to late-stage care. Our model gives you access to all the equipment and results you are looking for, in an atmosphere of care, shared with clients of similar stages of recovery to yourself.

“So don’t finish your inpatient or outpatient treatment and leave the job half done.”

So don’t finish your inpatient or outpatient treatment and leave the job half done. You would have already done a lot of work and sacrificed a lot of time, pain, and energy to get to the point where you now have a knee, hip or shoulder that has the potential to make your life a lot better. Longevity is here to help you reach that potential and finish the job for your fullest and best recovery.

I will certainly be taking my own advice and I empathise with how you are feeling as you step out of the hospital system and return to daily activities, work, and your own exercise. There is still a great need for guidance and support. I’ll be using the Longevity team for my exercise prescription from that point onwards until I am back to better than pre-operative health and fitness. I hope you choose to do the same.
