How can an Exercise Physiologist help?

Exercise Physiologists come equipped with the skills and knowledge to aid individuals aiming to lose weight, in a very safe manner. During an initial consultation, both subjective and objective information is gathered to understand the clients’ likes, dislikes, previous efforts and where the individual currently sits in “normative” data. This allows us to prescribe exercise that is suitable for our client’s current level of exercise tolerance; resulting in movement that is safe and tailored for the client. It can also be monitored, altered and modulated when necessary.

If you are an individual who may be considered a “novice” in the exercise setting, aiming to commence exercise but may not know where to begin, or searching for tailored and specific exercise – Exercise Physiology is for you.

General Exercise guideline to aid with weight control and management

Aerobic Exercise:

3-5days per week (OR most days of the week)

Aim to accumulate 150-300 min over the week (moderate exercise – RPE 11-13/20)

OR

Aim to accumulate 75-150min over the week (vigorous exercise – RPE 14-16/20)

Continuous or small bouts

Implementing exercise that is prolonged, rhythmic and utilising large muscle groups to aid with calorie expenditure

 

Resistance Exercise:

2-3 days per week (non-consecutive days)

2-4 Sets, 10-12 Repetitions

60-80% 1RM (repetition maximum)

Utilising movements that stimulate large muscle groups to again, aid with calorie expenditure

How can an Exercise Physiologist assist during this time?

A tailored and specific exercise program that is designed based of both subjective and objective information gathered in an initial consultation

  • Provide strategies and guidance that can be implemented into daily routine
  • Assist with goal setting
  • Education of physiological responses to exercise stimulus
