Rubbish, Recycling, and Your Kidneys: What Waste Management Teaches Us About Health

What the NSW government can teach us about our Waste Management and Chronic Kidney Disease.

Earlier this year, the NSW government announced funding to the tune of $81 million, to assist Local Councils in mandating all households, businesses and public institutions implement Food Organics and Garden Organics services by as early as 2026. This was done in efforts to alleviate some of the burden on our brimming landfill capacity around the state. In a media release announcing the changes, Minister of Energy Penny Sharpe acknowledged “we cannot kick this down the road any longer.”

The simple truth is that without a functioning Waste Management system in place, we risk a cascade of  impacts onward for every single aspect of society. Before you know it, we’d be up to our eyeballs in food waste, fast fashion and Amazon boxes. Absolute chaos.

In our body’s, the Kidneys are our Waste Management System. The ‘Garbos’ if you will. They handle waste from EVERY part of our system and take it out of sight out of mind. Put simply, without proper function we would see rapid deterioration across the body, sadly, resulting in death. But what if I told you that there was a way to help level bring balance to the system, improve health and quality of life. At Longevity Exercise Physiology, we believe that everyone should be in the driver’s seat with their health, through the power of exercise we have guided, enriched and improved the lives of thousands of clients. Just like them, we can help you get a start.

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a progressive condition that impacts approximately 1 in 10 Australians. However, as close to half of those that have CKD aren’t aware they have an issue until the condition has progressed beyond the intermediate stages.

In large part CKD prevalence is increasing due to things out of control. Our ageing population, genetic factors, smoking, alcohol consumption, Obesity, Type 2 diabetes can all play a part in the degradation of systemic functions within the body, ultimately leading to more load on the Kidney’s leading to dysfunction, impairment, and at terminal stages requiring replacement. Most recent figures indicate that this is why CKD has played a part in 11% of all Deaths in Australia in 2022.

Fortunately, we know that through Exercise Physiology we can directly alleviate the burden on the Kidneys slowing the progression of the condition, as well as address other issues that add additional stress to the system, improving both lifespan and healthspan. At Longevity Exercise Physiology, we have witnessed remarkable transformations in our clients through our world class care 1-on-1 exercise programmes at every stage of disease progression from early stages to advanced care incorporating World Class exercise to improve kidney function outcomes with patients with early CKD and End Stage CKD (we can even exercise during) dialysis sessions.

So why wait, help us, help you take back the steering wheel in your life, today.

  • Client Success Story: The 40-Year-Old Personal Best

Everyone loves doing a personal best (PB). It doesn’t matter if it is lifting weights, running, swimming, riding. It’s a great feeling that you have just taken your body to a level which it has never achieved before. What maked this blog so special is that as we age a lot of us start to feel like a PB is not attainable. I don’t like this mindset. I like the old dog that wants to learn new tricks. I like the attitude that says you are never to old to change and I like an attitude that knows that your body will adapt to any new stimulus you put it through and its response can be remarkable given enough time and the correct progression strategy.

Nigel is one of my clients who has such an attitude and last week he ran a 5km PB of 19mins 50secs at the age of 40! This is he how we did it:
