Starting as a New Grad: It’s Scary — But Choosing the Right Workplace Matters More Than You Think

If you’re a new graduate (or about to be), let’s say it plainly – starting your first role as an Exercise Physiologist can feel overwhelming.

You’ve gone from structured uni timetables, placement supervisors, and clear assessment criteria… to suddenly being expected to “be a clinician”, make decisions, manage clients, and build confidence quickly – all while trying to work out if you’re doing a good enough job.

That feeling is normal. Everyone feels it.

What matters most right now isn’t that you feel confident – it’s where you choose to grow that confidence.

The Workplace You Choose Can Shape Your Entire Career

Your first role doesn’t need to be perfect, but it does need to be supportive.

Early career EPs don’t burn out because they “aren’t cut out for it”. They burn out because they’re placed in environments where they’re expected to perform without being developed.

Here are the key things to look for when choosing a workplace as a new grad.

1. Structured Support (Not “Just Ask If You Need Help”)

A supportive workplace doesn’t just say they support new grads — they show it through structure.

Look for:

  • Regular mentoring or supervision (scheduled).
  • Senior clinicians who are available and approachable.
  • Clear onboarding processes.
  • Time built into your week for learning and reflection.

If support only exists when something goes wrong, that’s not support – that’s damage control.

2. A Safe Place to Ask Questions

You should be asking questions. A lot of them.

The right workplace:

  • Encourages curiosity.
  • Normalises not knowing everything.
  • Treats questions as part of professional growth, not a weakness.

If you feel scared to speak up, second-guessing every decision alone – that’s a red flag.

3. Clinical Exposure That Builds Confidence (Not Overwhelm)

Early on, variety is important – but not at the expense of guidance.

A strong new grad environment will:

  • Gradually increase complexity.
  • Match clients to your current skill level.
  • Help you understand why you’re doing what you’re doing.
  • Teach you how to problem-solve, not just follow programs.

You’re not meant to “figure it out” on your own.

4. Investment in Your Development

Ask yourself:

“Does this workplace see me as a clinician to grow – or just someone to fill sessions?”

Look for:

  • Internal education.
  • CPD support or guidance.
  • Pathways for progression.
  • Exposure to different funding schemes and populations with supervision.

The best workplaces think long-term – not just about filling today’s timetable.

5. A Team That Actually Feels Like a Team

You’ll spend a lot of your week at work. Culture matters more than you realise.

Healthy teams:

  • Celebrate wins (big and small).
  • Support each other through hard cases.
  • Communicate openly.
  • Care about client outcomes and clinician wellbeing.

You should feel like you belong – not like you’re surviving.

6. Leadership You Can Trust

You don’t need leaders who have all the answers — you need leaders who:

  • Care about your growth.
  • Give constructive feedback.
  • Set clear expectations.
  • Role model good boundaries and professionalism.

Strong leadership creates safe clinicians. Safe clinicians create better outcomes for clients.

It’s Okay to Be Nervous — That Means You Care

Feeling scared doesn’t mean you’re not ready. It means you want to do a good job.

Your first role should help you:

  • Build confidence.
  • Develop clinical reasoning.
  • Learn how to sustain a long career.
  • Fall in love with the profession – not feel defeated by it.

At Longevity, we believe new grads deserve more than “sink or swim”. We believe in structured support, strong mentoring, ongoing education, and a team environment where you’re never alone.

If you’re a new graduate looking for a workplace that genuinely invests in you — not just your availability — we’d love to hear from you.

Your career is a marathon, not a sprint. Choose a workplace that helps you go the distance.
