Why we need more Gym Based Exercise Physiologists: Longevity Leading The Way
By a certain stage in our lives every person has experienced a consult with a medical practitioner. When you think of health professionals, you probably picture a small sterile room with a treatment table and a desk. Longevity Exercise Physiology Drummoyne, Edgecliff, Marrickville, Castle Hill, Randwick, Pymble, Kingsgrove, Neutral Bay and Coburg want to change that.
Today, we ask Tammy, who recently joined the team at Coburg, how Longevity is leading the way in revolutionising the health and fitness industry with gym based Exercise Physiology, and why this is the best way to get our clients results.
There are many reasons exercising in a gym is advantageous to other settings. But if you’ve never exercised in a gym before, it’s hard to know where to start. At Longevity, we believe in making gym accessible to everyone, regardless of previous experience.
Seeing our clients in a gym gives us greater opportunity and variety to progress our clients. A gym provides us with endless ways to improve our clients strength and fitness. However, what is important is how this translates to life outside of the gym.
Gym based exercise isn’t just about improving your personal record for a leg press but more so about how this improves your quality of life. This could mean being strong enough to get up and down from the floor so you can play with your grandchildren.
Still not convinced? Let’s break down in more detail why you should consider working with a gym based Exercise Physiologist.
Gym vs Clinic Based Exercise Physiology
I personally have experienced working as a clinic based Exercise Physiologist in the past and can compare and reflect on my practice now that I have access to an entire gym in my new role with Longevity. Many of the restrictions I faced working in a clinic space have now been overcome, including:
- Managing long-term adherence; previously, I would eventually have to send clients away to complete certain modalities of exercise due lack of equipment and space. This meant that the value of our sessions were decreased, as I could not longer closely supervise the exercise. This also meant I could not progress clients to more challenging movement patterns as it would not be safe for them to do so without my guidance.
- Reaching performance goals; In a clinic setting with less variety in equipment, eventually I would have the struggle of ‘maxing out’ the equipment with my clients as we progressed their weights each week. This would mean they would begin to plateau and would not achieve the results they were after.
- Variety; Being able to work with my clients in a gym means we have access to a large variety of equipment. Not only does this make sessions more enjoyable, but variety is also an important principle to consider in our training to ensure we continue to see improvements.
Gym vs Home based Exercise Physiology
One of the benefits of working out in the gym is the access to different adjustable and measurable equipment which most people are unlikely to have access to otherwise. While exercising at home may be more convenient, for many individuals, home equipment and body weight based work outs do no stress our muscles and cardiovascular system enough to promote adaptation and see improvements in our overall health and fitness.
For example, an individual with osteoporosis needs heavy resistance training to have any chance at improving their bone mineral density. A few kettlebells and therabands is not going to cut it.
Don’t miss the opportunity to become apart of a great community
At Longevity, we have fostered a sense of community within our gym locations that inspires and motivates, ensuring all our clients feel comfortable and confident in a gym setting. To my point before, an appointment with your health professional doesn’t need to feel so sterile. We have had many clients who never thought they would be training in a gym, and they have grown to love it! This is partly because the community we have created within our gyms, being surrounded by like minded individuals is inspiring. Not to mention, the friendships and relationships our clients build with other longevity clients and gym members adds to the experience.
As Exercise Physiologists, it is our responsibility to help Australian’s lead happier and healthier lives. What better place to do this than in a gym? Having a presence in local gyms means we can help current members train more effectively and safely.
We understand for some individuals, gym based exercise may not be possible, which is why we also offer home visits and Telehealth consults. Our goal is to make Exercise Physiology accessible for everyone, so that we can improve the health of our communities.
At Longevity Exercise Physiology, our vision is to Give The Gift of Longevity Through Exercise. Our gym based approach is the best way to achieve this.
