Week Three of the Longevity Paid Internship: Putting Learning Into Practice
By week three of the Longevity paid internship, my role had shifted from delivering individual components of Exercise Physiology sessions to designing and delivering an entire session from start to finish. It felt like a significant step forward and gave me the opportunity to apply everything I had been learning over the previous two weeks.
Taking Ownership of Programming
This week, my focus was on programming complete client sessions. I spent time reviewing existing programs, considering each client’s goals, medical history and individual needs before creating my own sessions that included a warm-up, mobility work, cardio protocol and strength program.
One of the biggest highlights was designing and delivering a full session for my student supervisor, Ajesh. It was my first opportunity to step into the role of an Exercise Physiologist and put my clinical reasoning, communication and delivery skills into practice. The feedback I received afterwards was incredibly valuable and gave me clear direction on where I can continue to improve as a future clinician.
Learning From the Team
Another highlight was taking an active role in the weekly Student Synergy Meeting, where placement students from Longevity clinics come together online to discuss their wins, challenges and learning experiences.
During the meeting, another student shared that they found it difficult to provide feedback to the Exercise Physiologists they were shadowing. I was able to share something my supervisor had taught me—that students are an important part of the team, and Longevity’s culture encourages two-way feedback. Just as the EPs support our development, we’re encouraged to share our own observations and perspectives to help improve the clinic. It was rewarding to contribute to the discussion and realise how much I’d already grown during the internship.
Looking Ahead
To finish the week, the team introduced a potential development pathway that could see me return to Longevity as an Allied Health Assistant before graduating. It’s an exciting opportunity that I’m currently exploring and one that reflects the supportive culture I’ve experienced throughout the internship.
Each week has brought new challenges, greater responsibility and more confidence. Being trusted to program and deliver sessions has been one of the most rewarding experiences so far, and I’m excited to continue building my skills as the internship progresses.
