Rachel is Running in the Longevity Wave of the City2Surf
Hi, I’m Rachel, an Exercise Physiologist at Longevity Exercise Physiology, Randwick. I’m excited to share that I’ll be participating in the City2Surf this year with Longevity. It will be my second time participating in the City2Surf, my first time was last year with the Longevity team. It was such a great experience that I couldn’t wait to sign up again this year.
Why I’m Running the City2Surf
I’m joining the City2Surf because having an exciting goal to work towards really helps to keep me motivated with my running. The atmosphere, the challenge, and the support from the team make it an event to look forward to.
My Journey with Running
I am new to running having only taken it up over the last 2-3 years. Growing up, I was mainly involved in classical ballet and played sports such as netball and soccer. In my adult years, I focused on general strength and conditioning training, and more recently, on CrossFit and Olympic weightlifting. Running does not come naturally to me, but I’ve embraced the challenge and have been working hard to improve.
My Goals and Training for the City2Surf
My goal for this year’s City2Surf is to beat my personal best from last year and enjoy the day and the atmosphere with everyone. Additionally, I want to ensure my clients who are also participating have a good race, reach their individual City2Surf goals and enjoy the day.
To achieve my goals, I have been working with my exercise physiologist and colleague, Michael, to help me reach my City2Surf goal and beyond.
Here’s a glimpse into my weekly training routine:
- Long Runs: These are crucial for building the endurance needed to complete the 14km course. I gradually increase my mileage each week, allowing my body to adapt and grow stronger.
- Speed Workouts: Incorporating intervals and tempo runs helps me improve my pace and build speed. These workouts push me to run faster and more efficiently.
- Strength Training: Focusing on core, leg, and upper body exercises helps me develop the strength necessary for a strong and steady race. This also aids in injury prevention.
- Recovery: Taking care of my body is just as important as the training itself. I prioritize stretching, good nutrition and getting enough sleep to ensure I stay injury-free and ready for each session.
