Client Success Story: From a torn meniscus to the City2Surf! Mel’s* return to running.

In the run up to the  City2Surf, Longevity Exercise Physiology Drummoyne, EdgecliffMarrickvilleCastle HillRandwickPymble, Kingsgrove, Neutral Bay,and Coburg, would like to highlight a client at our Drummoyne location, Mel*.

Mel began working with our Exercise Physiologist, Georgia, at Drummoyne in December last year. After suffering a knee injury 9 months prior, and several failed attempts to return to running, Mel wasn’t sure if she’d ever get back on her feet.

Fast forward 6 months down the track and Mel is preparing to line up for her first City2Surf as part of the Longevity team!

Mel initially began working with Georgia to assist with her return to running. She was also aware of the challenges peri-menopausal women face and wanted to combat future changes to bone mineral density and body composition through exercise.

Mel has had an ‘on again off again’ relationship with running for years. She’d always enjoyed the feeling of being ‘fit’ but struggled with consistency due to recurrent injuries.

Mel loves running as a form of exercise, because she feels she can get a good work out in a short amount of time – with a full-time job, and two teenage sons, time is a rare commodity for Mel, so being able to return to running was essential.

Mel began training with Georgia twice a week. Her sessions consisted of both strength and high intensity cardiovascular training. Two supervised sessions each week allowed Georgia to deliver a thorough exercise program that was tailored specifically to Mel’s fitness level.

Since working with Georgia, Mel has been able to progress her running steadily without any major setbacks. Just last week Mel ran her fastest 5km in years! This is a fantastic result that can be attributed to the hard work she has put in over the last 6 months.

Mel is still training with Georgia once a week and can’t wait to line up on race day. For Mel, the City2Surf will be a celebration of how far she has come in such a short amount of time.

Mel’s goal is to run without stopping to Heartbreak Hill, and then run as much of the remaining course as she can. She has never done the City2Surf before, so she has not set herself a specific time goal. Mel is mostly looking forward to enjoying the freedom of being able to run again pain-free and celebrating the experience with the Longevity team.

Mel’s success is an excellent example of how our Longevity Exercise Physiologist can help you safely work towards your health and fitness goals. Call us today on 1300 964 002 to start your journey towards longevity!

  • The ‘Cosmetic Fitness’ Industry: a Facebook Rant

You might recognise the image above from your favourite social media platform. This image went viral and was a demonstration by Melanie Ventura about how easy it is to fake a before and after shot. You can read about how Melanie did this by clicking here

Also this week a friend of mine (thanks Kelly) wrote an enthusiastic and well constructed rant regarding the (health and) fitness industry.

“Rant: The fitness industry promotes a sort of body fetishism that produces a strategy for narcissistic survival and supposed emancipation, but that is simply bringing about a ‘cultural revolution’ that reproduces the very worst features of the constrained and superficial civilisation that the industry seeks to criticise. Fitness is not about youth and sexiness. It’s about fitness. Stop showing me sexy people who happen to have abs and can lift their foot above their botoxed face without sweating. Show me someone who can do their first triathlon, or who has put off osteoporosis for another 10 years.”

The unfortunate truth is that this argument is one that I find very difficult to refute.
