EP Mythbusters: What You’ve Been Told About Exercise Is Wrong

We’ve all heard them – the one-liners about exercise that get thrown around like facts:

  • “You should rest completely when you’re injured.”
  • “Soreness means it’s working.”
  • “You need to be fit before seeing an EP.”

The problem? These myths can stop people from getting the help they need, delay recovery, and even cause harm. At Longevity Exercise Physiology, we’re on a mission to clear up the confusion and give you the truth – based on science, not gym bro advice.

Let’s dive into some of the biggest myths we hear from clients – and what you really need to know.

Myth #1: “Rest is best for injury”

The Truth: While rest might be important immediately after an injury, extended rest often does more harm than good. Joints stiffen, muscles weaken, and pain can become worse due to inactivity.

At Longevity, our EPs guide clients through targeted rehabilitation – using exercise to safely rebuild strength, mobility, and confidence. We tailor movements to support recovery, not stall it.

Movement is medicine – when prescribed correctly.

Myth #2: “You have to be fit to start seeing an EP”

The Truth: You don’t need to “get in shape” to see an Exercise Physiologist – that’s our job! Whether you’re recovering from injury, managing a chronic condition, returning to exercise after years off, or just not sure where to begin, your EP will meet you exactly where you’re at.

We work with people of all fitness levels and health backgrounds, designing programs that are realistic, achievable, and aligned with your goals.

No judgement. No pressure. Just professional support.

Myth #3: “Soreness means progress”

The Truth: Soreness (DOMS: Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) can happen when you try something new – but it’s not the only or best indicator of progress. In fact, ongoing or excessive soreness might mean your recovery is off, your program isn’t right, or your body isn’t adapting well.

Progress is better measured through:

  • Improved strength or stamina
  • Less pain during daily tasks
  • Better balance, posture, or sleep
  • Greater confidence in your body

At Longevity, we build sustainable progress – not soreness for the sake of it.

Myth #4: “Pain means stop immediately”

The Truth: Yes, some pain is a red flag. But not all discomfort should be feared. Learning to understand the difference between good discomfort and harmful pain is key to progress—especially when managing conditions like arthritis, chronic pain, or post-injury rehab.

Your EP will help you interpret the body’s signals, adjust your training accordingly, and teach you how to move safely through discomfort when appropriate.

Sometimes, moving through mild pain is part of the healing process.

Myth #5: “You have to push yourself to the limit every session”

The Truth: Social media might glamorise “beast mode” and sweat puddles – but that’s not what real, lasting health looks like. In fact, constantly pushing to the limit increases injury risk and burns people out.

At Longevity, our philosophy is grounded in consistency, quality, and sustainability. That includes:

  • Knowing when to go hard, and when to pull back
  • Prioritising sleep, recovery, and nutrition
  • Working smarter – not just harder

Long-term results don’t come from extremes. They come from balance.
