Exercising the Family During Busy Times!

Longevity Exercise Physiology Drummoyne, EdgecliffMarrickvilleBella VistaRandwickLindfield and Balmain understand the importance of the whole family exercising, however it is not always easy with our busy schedules.

Now that the kids have gone back to school, finding time to get exercise in can be quite challenging. Your schedule has instantly been filled up with dropping the kids to school, picking them up, going to sport after school, extra-curricular activities after school and possibly sport on Saturdays too! Finding time to exercise with these added tasks can be tricky however, our Exercise Physiologists at Edgecliff, Lindfield, Marrickville, Randwick, Drummoyne, Balmain, Bella Vista have thought of some tips to maintain high levels of physical activity.

If they’re doing swimming lessons, get in the pool for some laps or if they’re playing football, go for a walk around the park and even use some of the park fitness equipment if it’s available.

  1. Walking or riding to and from school with the kids. This is a super easy way to get some physical activity in with the family together. If walking is too far from home, find a place to park which would be at least a 10 minute walk each way, therefore you are able to fit in some walking, along with avoiding the rush of all the parents trying to pick up or drop off their kids! Riding bikes together is also a fun and fast way to get to and from school.
  2. Completing your own exercise while the kid(s) train for sport. If you’re dropping the kids off to whatever sport they’re doing for school or outside of school, why not get some exercise in at the same time. If they’re doing swimming lessons, get in the pool for some laps or if they’re playing football, go for a walk around the park and even use some of the park fitness equipment if it’s available.
  3. Completing exercise while your kid(s) prepare for their competition. Once you’ve arrived at the venue for where your kid(s) may compete in their respective sport, there’ll be a moment where they have to warm up with the team or individually. During this time, go complete some exercise as usually this would be a down time prior to the competition starting. But make sure to be back on time!
  4. Completing some exercise as a family. Whether it’s on the weekend as an outdoor activity or afterschool, exercising as a family is great for building relationships but also benefiting our physical health. Going on weekend adventures which involve walking, or swimming or tasks where we are up on our feet are great, and keep the kids entertained. Afterschool, going to the local park to kick a footy around is also an easy way to get some physical activity in while keeping it interesting.

If you need further help with getting to exercise like this, or getting back into the swing of things following the new year, you should consult an Exercise Physiologist to keep yourself accountable and take control of your health.
