Nicola’s interest in physical activity began as a Nipper on Bondi Beach. From there she played a range of school sport in her time at SCEGGS Darlinghurst (touch football, hockey, athletics, tennis) before more recently enjoying AFL playing for UNSW-Eastern Suburbs in the Sydney Women’s League. Her passion for AFL growing during her time at the University of Western Australia attaining her undergraduate qualification. Being physically active as well as being involved in encouraging environment such as team sports are some of the important values Nicola has sought to bring to her career in health and exercise.

After years of training for distance running and triathlon as a teenager I developed a repertoire of training sessions that improve cardiovascular fitness rapidly. It’s now thirteen years later and I still can’t believe that the fitness industry is so far behind sport science in teaching people to apply basic principles to improve their cardiovascular fitness. The sessions I learnt in the 90s are still some of the best and well known methods to improve aerobic fitness. Here are the 4 basic sessions that EVERYONE should be doing to improve their cardiovascular fitness:
Don’t you just love how the English language is constantly evolving? We have new terms being created all the time. The new words added to the Oxford Dictionary in 2014 include: wackadoodle, scissor-kick and honky-tonker. Other words are simply changing their definitions as time goes by. The word “gay” has changed its meaning several times over the course of history. What was once more closely defined as happy now also means homosexual and for the younger generations it more likely means something like “lame”. Oh yeah, that word has eveolved its definition as well. That is the beginning of the problem when it comes to having a discussion on fitness. Many people don’t really know what it means to be fit because there are many definitions of fitness and many opinions on what it means to be fit. Describing someone as fit can mean that you think they are: attractive, healthy, compatible, strong, muscular, lean, skinny and the list goes on. Well, let’s see if I can clear some of this confusion up:
