What’s your City2Surf? Client Success Stories Part Three

Longevity Exercise Physiology, Drummoyne, Edgecliff, Marrickville, Castle Hill, Randwick, Pymble, Kingsgrove, Neutral Bay, and Coburg,   are celebrating the amazing achievements of our clients who didn’t complete in this years  City2Surf. but rather were able to work towards an alternate goal as part of our Stride2wardsWellness Campaign.

As well as celebrating our clients who completed the City2Surf, it is equally as important we showcase our clients with different backgrounds and capabilities achieving significant health and fitness milestones.

Jenny’s* City2Surf

Jenny has been working with Jack at Longevity Exercise Physiology Drummoyne since early June 2023. Jenny was initially referred to Longevity Exercise Physiology by her GP to assist with the management of her osteoporosis, breast cancer and knee osteoarthritis. Managing her health was important to Jenny, but more than anything she just wanted to make day to day life easier. Tasks that used to be simple, such as walking up the stairs and doing the shopping, had become increasingly difficult.

Early into Jenny’s Exercise Physiology journey, the opportunity to participate in the Longevity City2Surf Team arose. Jenny and Jack considered it, but ultimately decided she did not yet have the strength or stamina to complete the event safely without injury risk. Instead, Jack and Jenny came up with an alternative goal became to improve her confidence and no longer feel limited by her fitness in day to day life.

Jenny trains with Jack once a week, as well as exercising independently on her own. Jenny’s sessions involve both progressive resistance training and high intensity cardiovascular training, as it was apparent Jenny needed to improve her strength and fitness greatly to improve her tolerance to daily tasks.

After just a few months, Jenny can now walk up and down stairs more easily and without any pain. She has also increased walking speed and total walking distance. Jenny loves her sessions at Longevity because they are tailored to both her short term and long term goals.

Exercising under the supervision of our Exercise Physiologists allows Jenny to push herself but also be safe. Jenny continues to attend 1 on 1 Exercise Physiology sessions with Jack in Drummoyne and is excited to see what she can achieve in the months ahead.

Mason’s City2Surf

Jackie, one four Exercise Physiologists in Castle Hill, spoke with his client  Mason about the City2Surf recently. Together, they decided it wasn’t suitable for Mason at the moment due to the limitations to his walking capacity from his neurological impairment. However, Mason* is great on the treadmill and dramatically improved his gait pattern, leg strength and endurance over the last year. Together, they came up with the goal of reaching the City2Surf distance of 14km by breaking it up into small chunks over the next few months. Each Exercise Physiology session Mason had with Jackie, they would complete a cardiovascular protocol on the treadmill, record the distance, and add it to the total. This was equally motivating and personalised to Mason as he had a strong desire to improve his walking distance.

Since December 2021, Mason sees our Exercise Physiologists 3-4 times per week in addition to hospital rehab programs and a separate occupational therapist. Overall, his progress has been significant in terms of quality of life and wellbeing.

Mason completed the 14km total walking distance just after the City2surf in August, a fantastic milestone! Mason has made amazing progress since starting at Longevity. Increasing his 30second Sit to Stand from 5 w assistance to 18 unassisted. He has also improved his balance, increasing his tandem stance total time from to 2seconds to 30seconds.

He is now able to do things like play games at the arcade, get up and down the floor unassisted, go on dinner dates with his spouse, walk his dog, visit art galleries and walk around the shops. His result on the Stroke impact scale has also changed from 33% to 75%. Mason has also become less reliant on his walking stick, and will often walk without any aids.

Mason says the best part about training with Longevity  is the specificity and adaptability of our programming towards his personal goals. He also loves the community at our Castle Hill location and being surrounded by people that prioritise their health.

Well done to all our clients who have achieved some amazing results this month as a part of our Stride2wardsWellness campaign.
