Exercise for Osteoporosis: How Longevity Can Help You Build Stronger Bones for Life

I know what it’s like to live with fragile bones. As both an Exercise Physiologist and someone who grew up with juvenile osteoporosis, I’ve experienced firsthand how the right exercise can completely change your future.

At Longevity, we believe osteoporosis doesn’t have to define your life. Whether you’ve recently been diagnosed or have been living with osteoporosis for years, the right exercise program can help improve your strength, confidence, and quality of life.

My passion for helping people with osteoporosis started long before I became an Exercise Physiologist. Growing up with juvenile osteoporosis, I fractured my arms 10 times between the ages of four and fifteen. Those experiences were challenging, but they also taught me something incredibly important; exercise has the power to change lives. Through targeted strength training and supervised exercise, I was able to improve my own bone mineral density and build a stronger, healthier body. Today, I help others achieve the same outcome at Longevity.

What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition where bones become weaker, less dense, and more likely to fracture. Often called the “silent disease,” osteoporosis develops gradually and frequently has no symptoms until a fracture occurs.

It commonly affects:

  • The hips
  • The spine
  • The wrists
  • The ribs
  • The upper arms

While osteoporosis is often associated with ageing, it can affect people of all ages due to factors including:

  • Age-related bone loss
  • Menopause
  • Family history
  • Low calcium or Vitamin D intake
  • Long-term corticosteroid use
  • Inactivity
  • Certain medical conditions

According to Healthy Bones Australia, around 6.2 million Australians over the age of 50 have osteoporosis or osteopenia, placing them at increased risk of fractures.

If you’ve been diagnosed with osteoporosis, or simply want to improve your bone health; keep reading to discover how exercise can become one of the most powerful tools for protecting your bones.

Exercise for Osteoporosis: Why It Works

Many people diagnosed with osteoporosis worry that exercise might be dangerous. In reality, appropriately prescribed exercise is one of the most effective non-medication treatments available for improving bone health.

Research consistently shows that targeted exercise can:

  • Increase or maintain bone mineral density
  • Improve muscle strength
  • Reduce falls risk
  • Improve balance and coordination
  • Increase confidence with movement
  • Improve posture
  • Reduce fracture risk
  • Improve independence and quality of life

Not all exercise is equal. Walking is excellent for general health but usually isn’t enough on its own to stimulate bone growth.

The greatest improvements in bone health come from carefully prescribed:

  • Progressive resistance training
  • Weight-bearing exercise
  • Balance training
  • Functional movement training
  • Impact loading where appropriate

Every exercise program should be tailored to the individual’s bone density, medical history, fracture risk, and goals.

Additional Tips for Managing Osteoporosis

Exercise is one piece of the puzzle. Looking after your bones also means supporting your overall health.

Some simple strategies include:

  • Eat enough calcium-rich foods.
  • Ensure adequate Vitamin D through safe sun exposure or supplementation if recommended by your doctor.
  • Stay physically active most days.
  • Avoid smoking.
  • Limit excessive alcohol intake.
  • Maintain good posture throughout the day.
  • Reduce falls risks by keeping walkways clear and improving lighting at home.
  • Have your bone density monitored as recommended by your healthcare team.

Remember, it’s never too early or too late to invest in stronger bones.
