From an Intern’s Perspective: Recap of our First Longevity Mentorship Series Meeting in March

Hey! My name is Sevannah and I’m currently an intern at Longevity’s lovely Ascot Vale location in Victoria. Being in the last few months of my Master’s degree, the idea of going and getting myself a big girl job seems so scary. The comfort of being a student is very… bittersweet. But what scares me the most? There are so many things about going into the workforce after uni that are daunting.

Throughout this internship, I’ve realised that I’m not the only one that thinks about this. I’m so fortunate to have this opportunity because the team has been so incredible at making this transition seem less scary. At uni, everything seems like it has to be textbook perfect. But Longevity has made me realise that it doesn’t have to be.

Take on advice. Not everyone loves to hear things they did wrong, but as humans how would we learn if we don’t make mistakes? Use feedback to become a better version of yourself. This will make your sessions with clients much more valuable. And even feed into your relationships outside of work and uni. Recognise strengths and weaknesses (as hard as it can be) and bridge the gap.

Take initiative and be proactive. This can be anywhere from calling your leader or supervisor before your start date to introduce yourself, to doing small tasks without asking. Point is, make an impression – this will set you apart from others. It is true when people say that a good first impression lasts.

Stay open-minded. It is easy to follow the mob mentality of placement feeling like just an obligation to pass uni. I admit, I am a victim of this. But, what I’ve realised is that placement is so much more. Here is where you develop the type of EP you are going to be, and where you might want to work when you’ve graduated. Placement should be treated like a job interview and everyone would give 110% for a job they wanted to get.

My favourite one – the “heads up” approach. If you keep your head down, opportunities will pass by without you realising . But, if you keep your head up there is no way you can miss the amazing opportunities that will come your way.

Hopefully this gives a nice snapshot of how to nail a placement experience. The mentorship series is only just starting so be sure to RSVP for the next on Wednesday 15th April! See you soon!
