Lessons on My Paid Internship at Longevity Exercise Physiology in Ascot Vale, Victoria

Hey everyone! My name is Sevannah and I’m an intern at Victoria’s Ascot Vale location. I’ve just wrapped up my 7th week of this internship and have been learning so much.

Getting to the tail-end of my Master’s degree while completing the internship, there’s this natural thought of am I ready to go into the real-world? But the last 7 weeks have shown that there are so many factors to being a good EP. Obviously knowing the latest evidence-based practice is super important, but the type of person you are to clients is possibly more important. We need to be compassionate, empathetic, caring, enthusiastic and everything in between.

Throughout the internship I’ve had the opportunity to shadow client sessions and eventually take parts or whole sessions, build rapport with clients, connect with the Longevity team and work on my practical skills as a clinician.

Last week, I attended meetings with other allied health professionals. It was so nice to see like-minded people appreciate each other’s professions and hope to work together to better others’ lives. Not only this, but Longevity has been super active in helping improve my professional leadership and development through hosting meetings for placement students, hosting PD opportunities and frequent meetings.

This week, I’ve learnt that the client comes first. Transferring from uni to real-world environments means learning that you could have the best plan for the client but if that plan doesn’t fit the client’s presentation, then you need to re-frame your session to best suit the client’s needs. I”ve also learnt the importance of our role in people’s lives.

Can’t wait to see what’s in store for me next week at Longevity!
